10 reasons to start blogging

A lot of people are blogging. We read their posts, sometimes we comment on them, other times we tweet them or launch a discussion on LinkedIn. But should we start blogging? Why should we start blogging?

To blog or not to blog

Bloggers have a lot of reasons why they started in the first place. In time most of the bloggers may change their reasons but here are ten of the reasons why we should start a blog.

1. To improve our reach. By creating and posting our ideas on the web we spread our thoughts wider than our circle of friends. Virtually everybody who is doing a search on the topic we posted an article can find it. we can do this for us or for our business. We can spread the word about our products and other products we used. This can lead to more sales or just increase the awareness.

2. To showcase our expertise in a certain field. If we (personally or our business) want to be known as experts in our field we have to show some proof. We can do this by getting certifications or by showing the results of our work. We can use a blogging platform for this. We can write about our experiments, our work and we can get customers to write about the results.

3. To teach others things we know and help them get results faster. Some of the bloggers have started writing just to help people not to make the same mistakes they’ve done. Then they build content and organized it into an e-book, as Darren Rowse did with his 31 days to build a better blog, or an online training course as Brian Clark did when he created Teaching Sells. But in the beginning they just wanted to teach others from their mistakes.

4. To improve our personal brand. Our personal brand on the web is measured based on the number of results we get when we search for our name and the relevance of those results. If we create online content and we link it with our brand name, it will increase the number of relevant results and our brand becomes stronger. Some people use a blog to build a portfolio of their projects and when employers are searching online, they can find their work easily.

5. To order and to log our thoughts. It happens very often that we have an idea and if we do not write it down we are going to forget it, sometimes forever. Pat Flynn started his blogging because he wanted to organize his thoughts in preparation for an exam. Then he found out that other people found very useful his shared notes and now he is a renowned blogger.

6. To ask other people opinions. Once we have started blogging, we can create polls or just ask for comments on our work or our subjects of interest. We will get pretty quickly an image of what other are thinking about that subject

7. To test our ideas. What better way to test our ideas than to show them to a bunch of people and let them criticize. This way we will get a quick view of the flaws of our ideas and we can fix them.

8. To help people get answers to their questions. In today’s society if we face a problem we seek for advice online. We have even invented the word googling for that. And when we found a solution to one of our problems we can post it online and help other to solve similar issues.

9. To improve our writing and copywriting skills. If you want to get better you have to exercise. Writing on the web is different than writing in a newspaper or writing a novel. It seems that before you find your inner voice you need to write at least 30 posts. And if you want to exercise this you have to start a blog.

10.  To get more money. Some bloggers want to get more money. Form other bloggers’ experiences the money you make are not much but may help you monetize your passions or fund your projects or hobbies. A few will make a living out of a blog, and very few will have the chance to change their lifestyle blogging.

    Thanks for the mention Adrian!

This may sound weird, but I guarantee that I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for blogging. It’s changed my life forever ;)

    Cheers!
