Two days ago I received a small package from the US. When I opened it I saw two books. They were two copies of “Delivering Happiness“. I applied for getting an advance copy of Tony Hsieh’s book that will be released in June with not too much hope, mostly because I live on another side of the world. Here Zappos does not exist and until recently Amazon did not deliver to much stuff.
Before even opening the book Tony and his team has taught me these 3 important lessons:
1. Make others feel important. By delivering the book to my location at their own cost they made me happy. I am not a great blogger, I am not in Zappos geographical target and if they wouldn’t send me the book I would have bought it later. But the book was shipped, I received it and this made me happy. When living our personal brands we have to create these memorable moments for others, being in our target audience or not. We can do this by keeping in our office some candies that we can offer to everybody who stops by, or by buying lunch for our colleagues once in a while or even by just offering our help or listening to them. Delivering happiness does not cost a lot, we just have to make that step and make the other feel important.
2. Deliver more than expected. When I applied for the book, I applied for a copy. Instead of one I received two. Our personal brand should do the same. Last week I held a workshop on the online identity topic. We talked a lot about that but we also talked about things like how to organize yourself, how to get things done and how to achieve your goals even these were not part of the workshop. I felt that my audience needed some answers on these topics, I gave my best shot and they left happier.
3. Enable others to deliver happiness. By giving to your contacts you may make them happy. But by enabling them to give to their friends you will reach far more people and you can make a better world. That’s what Tony’s team did. They gave me one copy for me and another to give it for free to whomever I choose, no strings attached. Our personal brand should inspire others to deliver happiness. We cannot reach everybody who needs us, but by getting our direct contacts to become our brand ambassadors we reach far more. Remember that there are only six pixels of separation and we need only six persons to deliver happiness to any person from this world.
